Nationally and internationally known architects of the 19th and early 20th century designed buildings, bridges, and landscapes for Modesto including Bernard Maybeck, Julia Morgan, William Weeks, Bernard Joseph, John Leonard, John McLaren, and Howard Gilkey. The city developed a national reputation for cutting edge design beginning in the 1930s when architects began experimenting with what we now call Central Valley Modernism. In the following decades, Gardner Daily, Christopher Alexander, Frank Lloyd Wright, William Wurster, Palmer and Krisel, SOM, Anshen and Allen, John Funk, Milton Pflueger, William Turnbull, and many more designed projects in the city. At the same time, some of the modernist landscape designers were active in Modesto including Lawrence Halprin, Thomas Church, and Robert Royston. The architecture festival is your opportunity to enjoy the city’s design heritage, contemporary world architecture and landscape, and the recent work of local members of the American Institute of Architects Sierra Valley Chapter.
